2 Sketch Your Composition

Sketch the initial drawing with a fine-tip Colour Shaper, or any other tool that won’t dig into the surface beneath the paint layer. I also like to use the tip of a folded rag to draw and wipe into and away from the painted surface.

3 Lift Out Highlights

Once your initial drawing is complete, use a rag dipped in open thinner to carefully wipe back areas of the portrait to create light values. This method will allow you to get a range of value from dark to light and easily make corrections. You can even do this as much as a day later and still be able to lift out the open acrylic paint.
